Pearl Export Series Snare Drum Review

Pearl Export Series Snare Drum

A Solid Snare to Start With

The Pearl Export Snare Drum is not currently part of the Pearl line up. But you’ll still find it as essential equipment on the kits of many drummers. Many started on an Export kit. They continue to appreciate the solid sound delivered year after year by this durable snare. The 5.5X14 inch construction will maintain its sound even with the inevitable dings and scratches that come with years of gigging. Pearl’s exclusive heat compression shell molding system makes for longevity, but also the volume and clarity it possesses.

Likes

The tone and warm sound of the Pearl Export Snare Drum has always been its signature characteristic. One that has made it a best seller over the years. Though discontinued, parts are standard Pearl’s. The drum can be maintained and updated easily. Drummers commend the Export as being a great drum on which to learn and play quality music. Styles it handles best include rock, jazz, pop and country.

Dislikes

This is an entry level snare. Some expect more than it delivers and are disappointed as a result. Expect good quality sound, suitable for live playing in small venues. It does not have the volume for larger gigs. Or the crisp, rich sound for studio work.

Overall Rating – 3 Stars

The Pearl Export Snare Drum has a very good reputation, especially as an entry level drum. Quality used models can still be found, and at a good price. This is a solid 3 Star drum.

I would agree vintage export 14 x 6 chrome snare drum. Change heads for Good quality snare and two ply batter improved tone and response greatly. Change hoops for ducats improves tone to degree. Great drum , much improved with small investment.

Pearl Export snare? Sure. You do get a fair amount of bang, I mean ka-thwak for the buck.
Add wider snares for more sensitivity, and die cast hoops for mass…which will translate to more volume, more attack.
Keep your bearing edges clean. Install a plain old coated Ambassador and you will have a nice sounding drum. Vintage Ludwig Supra? No. But for the student, or casual player, it’ll do fine.

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for weighing in on this snare! Appreciate your honest opinion! Do you now own all of these drums?

I have a year 2000 chrome snare drum I got with my export select kit. To my ears, I found its sound on par with my 1970 Ludwig Supraphonic. Maybe not the overall quality of the Ludwig but not enough difference that I’d choose one drum over the other. I’ll get pushback on that but to my ears, that’s how it goes!

    Hey Thomas,
Thanks for stopping by and weighing in these two drums! I’ll be interested to hear what others think as well.
