Reliable, Affordable Performance

Tama has been turning out very good drums for a long time. The Tama Swingstar snare drum line has stood the test of time and is still played today.  They were produced throughout the 1980’s to the mid-1990’s. As a result, many current professionals started on a Swingstar.

Amazing music was played on these snares in their heyday, from rock legends like U2 and Guns N’ Roses to cutting-edge indie bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure. You no doubt have your favorites. Playing their music on drums from that era gives it authentic sound.

We could go on, but this is about the Swingstar snares that gave voice to so much great music, and still does.

The models available today range in size, with 5.5X14 the most common, with 6.5X14 being popular, as well. Steel construction is standard on most models, with 8 lugs being the norm.

Likes

The Tama Swingstar snare drum has a reputation among drummers for being a solid performer. Having good, crisp sound with a very pleasing ring. The steel body is very durable, and the 8 lugs are easy to adjust. Once in tune, it stays put till the player wants to change it. The internal components are of good quality and will endure.

Used Swingstars are generally in good condition and are available at affordable prices. They fit the bill for many uses. Swingstars make nice starter snares. Teachers like their toughness – they can take plenty of abuse.  Anyone putting together a decent drum set on a budget will appreciate their price. Oh, and if you enjoy music from the 80s and 90s, you will have a lot of fun playing it on equipment from that period.

Dislikes

This snare does not rise to the level of being a collectible, or even “vintage,” because the sound was good, but never great. If you pick up a Tama Swingstar snare drum expect to change the heads on it, as most exhibit a lot of wear.

Overall Rating – 4 Stars

The Tama Swingstar Snare Drum is a sturdy, reliable performer, and the used ones available would serve as very good entry level snares. Mainly due to durability and a lack of glaring weaknesses, we give it 4 Stars.
