Gretsch Catalina Snare Drum
Classic Good Looks with a Vintage Sound
The Gretsch Catalina snare drum features smart vintage looks and delivers a pure classic sound to match. That sweet crack is produced by a multi-ply wood shell enhanced with die cast hoops, a 30 degree edges, traditional throw-off, and the time-honored Gretsch “T-Roof” badge. Evans drumheads complete the package. Woods used in the line include traditional mahogany, birch, maple and ash. Sizes vary, with 5X14 being the standard. Gretsch snare drums use a wide range of classic finishes, all with a retro nod.

Drummers report very good sound quality in the Gretsch Catalina snare drum. Featuring crisp crack with deeper, throaty tones underneath. The wood shells are a favorite of collectors for their traditional looks and play. And many appreciate that good quality drums are available new and used at very reasonable prices. The Gretsch Catalina Club snare is one of the best value snares on the market.
Dislikes
The snares on some of the Gretsch Catalina snare drum models rest in a very shallow bed. This can produce some sympathetic rattle when striking other drums. It takes a lot of finesse tuning to eradicate the problem. Some find it nearly impossible to do.
Overall Rating – 4 Stars
The Gretsch Catalina Snare Drum, or Catalina Club, is a robust snare to use for rock, country, jazz, and R&B, when a deeper tone is desired. It therefore gives excellent “bang for the buck” and occupies the low to medium price range. It’s a solid 4 Stars.
